1. Coventry was the world’s first ever twin city.
During World War Two, Coventry became the world’s first twin city, when it was paired with Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in Russia. Apparently, the relationship was established as a way of allowing the people of Coventry to show their support for the Russian Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad.
2. London’s black cabs are actually from Coventry.
You would be excused for thinking that the world famous black cab was from London. In fact, it is kind of hard to think of London without images of the black cab popping into your head. However, the black cab is actually from Coventry and has always been made there.
3. Coventry takes its name from an ancient tree.
According to local legend, the name ‘Coventry’ has its roots in a tree that once grew at a crossroads that later became the site of Coventry Castle. The tree was named ‘Cofa’s Tree’, and the Cathedral Lanes Shopping Centre now stands on the site.
4. There is an asteroid named after Coventry.
An asteroid that was found in 1973 by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh was named 3009 Coventry. Chernykh knew of Coventry because of the fact that it was twinned with Stalingrad.
5. The saying “True Blue” came from Coventry.
The origins of this famous saying can be dated back to 14th Century Coventry. At the time, Coventry was famous for its blue dye, and blue cloth from the area became incredibly expensive and fashionable as it did not fade when washed.
