1. Romantics will love Harrogate.
In 2013, Harrogate beat of efforts from rival cities Paris, Rome and Vienna to be named the third most romantic destination in the world. London and Reykjavik took the top two spots.
2. Harrogate is one of the happiest places in Britain.
Harrogate was crowned the ‘happiest place to live in the United Kingdom’ in a 2013 poll. A massive 40,000 people took part in the poll, which saw Harrogate beat Stockport and Ipswich to claim the top spot.
3. The 2012 Olympic Cauldron was built in Harrogate.
The Olympic Cauldron for the 2012 London Olympics was built in what designer Thomas Heatherwick described as a ‘Bond Gadget Workshop’ in Harrogate. Until it was revealed at the opening ceremony, no one knew where the cauldron was being built, what the design was, or who would light it!
4. A Viking treasure hoard was found near Harrogate.
In 2007, two Harrogate metal detector enthusiasts discovered a hoard of Viking treasure that was dated back to the 10th Century. The hoard was made up of close to 700 coins and a number of other items from as far afield as Afghanistan!
5. The effect of adrenaline on the human circulatory system was first observed by a Harrogate doctor.
George Oliver, a doctor from Harrogate, was the first person in the world to observe the effect of adrenaline on the human circulatory system in 1893. He also invented several instruments such as the haemoglobinometer, haemodynamometer and arteriometer.
